University lecturer in law, substitute

The Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki is seeking a University Lecturer for a fixed-term position from September 1, 2026, to August 30, 2028, who can teach public law, particularly international law.

 

The responsibilities of the University Lecturer in Law include providing undergraduate education as well as supervising and examining theses in the Bachelor of Laws program and in one or more of the faculty's Master’s programs.

 

The University Lecturer will conduct independent scientific research and manage jointly agreed administrative and other tasks. Teaching responsibilities also include instruction under the Open University brand. The place of employment for University Lecturers is Helsinki, but the position also involves teaching duties at the faculty's education unit in Vaasa. The role is teaching-oriented.

 

Requirements for the Position and Evaluation of Qualifications

 

Candidates must hold a relevant doctoral degree in accordance with the University of Helsinki's regulations and demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and supervise theses. The University Lecturer must have good teaching skills.

 

The language of instruction for the position is English. More information about language proficiency and demonstrating language skills can be found on the university's website.

 

When assessing candidates' qualifications, both scientific and teaching merits will be considered. Scientific merits include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value. Teaching merits will take into account teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other achievements in teaching, and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.

The salary for the position is based on the university's salary system for teaching and research personnel, at levels 5-6 (-7). Additionally, a performance-based salary component will be paid. The gross salary for the position will be approximately €42,000–56,000 per year, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The position will be subject to a 6-month probationary period.
