University lecturer in Finno-Ugric linguistics

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of

 

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN FINNO-UGRIC LINGUISTICS

to be appointed on a permanent basis as of 1 August 2025 or as agreed. The position will include a trial period of six months.

 

The university lecturer will teach within the curriculum of Finno-Ugric linguistics in the BA program in Finno-Ugric and Scandinavian languages and literatures, the MA program in Finnish language and Finno-Ugric languages and literatures as well as indigenous studies. Indigenous studies study units are also part of the MA programs in Environmental Change and Global Sustainability, as well as Intercultural Encounters. The university lecturer will have the opportunity for collaboration with other BA and MA programs. The lecturer will also be required to conduct independent scientific research, supervise and evaluate theses at various levels, and take on administrative responsibilities, which will be further specified.


The university lecturer will be affiliated at the Department of Finno-Ugric and Scandinavian studies.

 

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

 

In accordance with the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the position of university lecturer must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to collaborate, plan operations, provide high-quality teaching based on research and supervise theses.

 

The assessment will be based on scientific publications and other research results considered as scientific merits in Finno-Ugric languages and cultures, as well as Indigenous studies. This includes teaching experience, pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching materials, and other teaching merits. Further merits will include successful research and teaching experience in Finno-Ugric languages and cultures, as well as Indigenous studies, such as familiarity with the ethical and methodological issues in indigenous studies. Excellent proficiency in a Finno-Ugric minority language, along with close research connections with Finno-Ugric minority language speaking communities, will be considered an asset.

 

Appointees to teaching and research positions at Finnish universities must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction,  i.e., in this case, Finnish and English. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire sufficient proficiency within a reasonable period of time. Support for studying the language will be provided. Further information on language skills and the demonstration of language proficiency is available on the University website.

 

SALARY

 

The salary will be based on levels 5 to 7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,800 to €4,800, depending on their qualifications and experience.
