University Lecturer in World Politics

The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of
 
UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN WORLD POLITICS
 
for a fixed-term appointment from 1 August, 2025 to 31 July, 2026.
 
The duties of the present university lecturer will include providing teaching in accordance with the degree requirements, supervising and examining theses and dissertations, and conducting research in the field.

The teaching duties are carried out in the degree programmes in which world politics is included: the BA and MA programmes for Politics and Communication and the international MA programme Global Politics and Communication.  Among the courses to be taught, are “Foreign Policy and Security” in the BA programme for Politics and Communication, “Advanced Theories of International Politics” in the MA programme for Politics and Communications and “Theories of Politics and Communication in the Information Age” in the international MA programme Global Politics and Communication.

In addition to research and teaching duties, the position includes advising students and supervising theses, administrative responsibilities, and other tasks to be agreed upon separately.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
The appointee shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.

We appreciate broad research experience in the field of world politics and experience in supervising thesis. In particular, we appreciate academic merits in the field of international relations theories and peace and conflict studies.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have excellent English skills. Proficiency in the Finnish language is considered an advantage.

When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to:  
•    Scholarly publications and other scholarly activities
•    Teaching experience, supervision of theses and dissertations and other pedagogical merits, pedagogical training, the development of teaching, the production of learning material
•    The interview with the applicant.

The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki. International staff are supported in relocating to Finland. The employment contract will include a probationary period of six months.

•    A report (max. 3 pages) on practical experience and qualifications relevant to the assessment of teaching skills.
•    A report (max. 3 pages) on the applicant’s scholarly activities (including activities in scientific communities, international scholarly cooperation, the acquisition of research funding and the applicant’s role in the acquisition of such funding, public engagement)
