University Lecturer in English

A permanent position of University Lecturer in English from 1 August, 2025.
This teaching position will focus on teaching English academic communication to doctoral researchers and developing the content and implementation of transferable skills courses in the Doctoral School. The Doctoral School serves all of the disciplines of the University.
About the position
The university lecturer will:
- teach English graduate communication (writing and presentation skills) according to the needs of the Doctoral School and its multilingual researchers, both on campus and online, and contribute to their professional skills training
- develop courses focused on other communication needs of doctoral researchers, as well as other types of language support
- develop courses and teaching methods for contact, blended and online teaching, using a research-based orientation and in collaboration with the stakeholders
- take care of administrative duties related to teaching
- participate in the joint development activities of both the Language Centre and the Doctoral School
The person we are looking for
The appointee should be an experienced teacher of graduate communication in English, with experience in teaching students from various linguistic backgrounds at a high pedagogical level in university language centres or similar higher education institutions.
The person selected for the role is required to have:
- an applicable doctoral degree, the degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline
- the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research
- experience in teaching graduate communication and the development of teaching
- good overall teaching skills
- proficient English skills. A good command of Finnish (or an interest in learning) is considered an advantage.

- the ability to produce study materials
- the ability to apply various teaching methodologies to diverse groups of learners
- knowledge in a wide range of subject areas
- a record of conducting and publishing research
- a view of developments in doctoral education
To successfully attend to the duties of this position, the appointee should be cooperative, flexible and interested in professional development and active participation in the Language Centre’s and Doctoral School’s activities. When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to the interview and demonstration of teaching, in addition to the requirements described above.

The salary of the position is based on the salary system for the teaching and research staff at Finnish universities. The salary consists of salary elements related to job requirements and personal performance. For this position, the job requirement level is 6 and the gross monthly salary will approximately be between 4200–4500 €/month at the beginning of the employment relationship, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period will be applied.
The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki. International staff are supported in relocating to Finland.

The Language Centre
The University of Helsinki Language Centre is the largest language training institute in Finland and a multilingual and multicultural working community. The Language Centre provides the communication and language studies included in the bachelor’s and master’s degrees of the University of Helsinki. In addition, it provides graduate communication support in the Doctoral School on a full-time basis. It also offers the university community a wide range of services related to language and communication.
