University Lecturer in Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

for a permanent appointment starting in November 2025 or later as agreed. The employment includes a six-month trial period.

The lecturer will be attached to the Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelor’s Programme currently under preparation at the University and launching in Fall semester 2026. This programme, led by the Faculty of Arts, joins together the faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Agriculture and Forestry, and Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki for its first broadly interdisciplinary international bachelor’s.

The recruit will have the unique opportunity to take part in designing and delivering a programme first of its kind in the University and in Finland. The pedagogical idea behind the programme is that through being exposed to, and needing to integrate diverse disciplinary outlooks, students will learn (alongside disciplinary skills) broadly useful meta-skills of interdisciplinary contextualisation, analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking.

The recruit will be responsible for setting up computer science-related courses and content included in the Liberal Arts and Sciences programme and coordinating activities with other faculties involved in the programme. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme will also require a plenty of student mentoring and supervision, which the recruit will also partake in.

In addition to the Liberal Arts and Science Bachelor’s programme, the recruit is expected to contribute to other teaching programs at the Department of Computer Science, for example BSc Programme in Computer Science, BSc Programme in Science, MSc Programme in Computer Science, or MSc Programme in Data Science, depending on the qualifications and language skills of the recruit.

Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, appointees to university lectureships must hold an applicable doctoral degree and have the ability to provide high- quality research-based teaching and supervise theses.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.

Additional evaluation criteria for this position are:

• Experience in some area of computer science represented at the department (algorithms, networks, software engineering, AI, data science)
• Experience of working in highly interdisciplinary environments
• Experience in designing and enacting (interdisciplinary) teaching (on any level, e.g. course/module/programme)
• Experience in coordinating and organising (interdisciplinary) teaching and/or research
• Experience in mentoring and guiding students

Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., English for this position. Good co-operation and interaction skills are considered an advantage for the applicant.
