University Lecturer, Veterinary Pathology

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki is the only institution of higher education in Finland to train veterinarians. It has about 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs approximately 150 academic staff, which is nearly half of the entire staff. The degree programmes have been accredited in accordance with the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training (ESEVT). The Faculty has four departments (Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, Equine and Small Animal Medicine, Production Animal Medicine, Veterinary Biosciences) and Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

 

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of a

 

UNIVERSITY LECTURER

 

to a permanent position starting on 1 March 2024 or as agreed. The field of the position is veterinary pathology. The position will be at the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, connected to the multidisciplinary environment of the HOH Helsinki One Health network organization.

 

Duties of the university lecturer include supervision of undergraduate and post graduate theses as well as lecturing and research in veterinary pathology. The duties also include diagnostic work of animals (including cytology and biopsy samples and necropsies) as well as development of teaching and participation in administrative tasks and in other developmental work.

 

What we expect

 

The appointee must be licensed to practice as a veterinarian and hold either a veterinary PhD degree or other suitable PhD degree. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. The appointee is expected to provide high quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.

 

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention is paid to teaching and research merits, possible further education in veterinary pathology and experience in diagnostic work.  Please be also prepared for a possible invitation to teaching demonstration. The appointment committee will give a topic for that. For university lecturer position the minimum requirement of teaching skills as a whole is at least good.

 

About Finnish and Swedish language skills

 

The appointee for the teaching and research position must be competent in Finnish and have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Swedish.

 

For this position being applied for, an exception from the language proficiency requirement can be granted for non-native Finnish citizens or Finnish citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, (s)he is required to acquire a reasonable level of proficiency in Finnish within five years of taking up the position. The target is that the university lecturer will then be able to accept student assignments in Finnish and participate in the faculty's administrative tasks. The faculty will support learning the language.

The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities and the monthly gross salary will be 4 000–5 500 euros depending on the appointee’s experience and merits. The appointment includes a six month probationary period for new employees.
