Two Trainees for research group, The Helsinki Hub on Emotions, Populism, and Polarisation

The University of Helsinki International trainee programme is open to all international students enrolled in a University of Helsinki master’s programme.

We are now looking for two TRAINEES for our research group, The Helsinki Hub on Emotions, Populism, and Polarisation.

The duration of a traineeship is from 1 September to 31 December 2025 (four months) of part-time (55%) work, leaving time for studies as well. The salary of a trainee is €825 per month for a part-time (55%) trainee.

About the position

We are hiring two trainees to join our vibrant and international research group, the Helsinki Hub on Emotions, Polarisation, and Populism (HEPP), based at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Our trainees will take part in all of HEPP’s core activities, including the publication of our Working Paper Series, planning for the HEPP6 conference (to be held in May 2026), and our weekly seminars. Trainees will take part in meetings related to these and other HEPP efforts, gaining a well-rounded understanding of how academic work proceeds in a Finnish office. They will assist with internal and external communications, website updating, research-related tasks, and the technical work essential to hybrid working. Trainees will also have the opportunity to develop their own Masters research by presenting at the HEPP seminar.

The person we are looking for

Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in HEPP’s main fields of research, namely political science and media studies. Trainees will be joining an English-speaking working group, so strong written and spoken English is essential; additional language skills are a bonus rather than a necessity. Ideal applicants will also be comfortable using Excel and have some experience in website upkeep (for example using Wordpress or another platform).

Why work for us

We offer you an international, multicultural and innovative working environment with interesting assignments related to research in the social sciences. We support your work with active guidance so that you can get the most out of your traineeship. We invite trainees to play an active role in our research group by participating in meetings, developing working relationships with our researchers, and even proposing their own initiatives.
