Two Postdocs for the FAME Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling

The Research Council of Finland funds four Finnish Flagships over two four-year periods. The Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling, FAME, is a multidisciplinary consortium that develops methods of applied mathematics and physics for the benefit of society, including medical imaging, industrial process monitoring, non-destructive structural testing and satellite data analysis. FAME is led by the University of Eastern Finland, and the consortium members include University of Helsinki, LUT University, University of Jyväskylä, Aalto University, University of Oulu, Tampere University, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute. A total of 100 new PhD students will start soon related to FAME, out of which 17 at University of Helsinki. See http://www.fameflagship.fi  for more information.

Two Postdoctoral Researchers for the FAME Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling

Position description / Responsibilities

The FAME project aims to transfer insights and algorithms from the mathematics of inverse problems to a diverse range of societally relevant applications.

The research scope of our FAME team includes the following themes:

  • digital geography (Professor Tuuli Toivonen)
  • enhanced seismic surface wave imaging using deconvolution strategies (Professor Gregor Hillers)
  • gamma ray imaging for nuclear safety, security and safeguards (Professor Peter Dendooven)
  • medical imaging, including X-ray tomography and electrical impedance tomography (Professor Samuli Siltanen)
  • probabilistic methods in inverse problems (Professor Lauri Oksanen)
  • geometric and nonlinear inverse problems (Professor Matti Lassas)

The two postdoctoral researchers’ interests can lie in any of the diverse topics and are ideally complementary to more than one focus theme. We expect the successful candidate to develop and integrate approaches across the various focus areas. The associated strong willingness to adapt, diversify, and learn is emphasized by the required involvement in the supervision of PhD candidates who conduct co-supervised multidisciplinary research in the FAME associated DREAM doctoral pilot.

Qualifications / Requirements
Suitable candidates have a background in mathematics or a discipline that is related to our FAME themes. We are looking for postdoctoral researchers interested in working on inverse problems and other modes of inference that extract meaningful information from noisy and incomplete observations, and who are interested in applications in the indicated fields of research. We welcome applications also from candidates who have not earlier worked on the above topics but who show a distinct motivation to expand their expertise in new fields. Experience in scientific programming is an advantage.

Women and other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The University of Helsinki seeks to promote an equitable and inclusive working environment and welcomes applicants of any gender, linguistic and cultural background, or minority group.

Contract
The position is for 2 years. There is a trial period of 6 months. The starting date should be no later than January 1st, 2025.

Salary and benefits / What we offer
The starting salary of a Postdoctoral Researcher is typically 3700 - 3900 euros/month, depending on previous qualifications and experience.

The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The University provides support for internationally recruited employees with their transition to work and life in Finland. How to apply
The applicant should submit the following documents:

• CV (max 2 pages)
• Cover letter detailing the familiarity with and preference for any of the indicated University of Helsinki FAME research topics, and experience with the supervision of students at the BSc, MSc, and PhD candidate level (max 2 pages)
• Names and institutional email addresses of up to 3 references

The application deadline is May 31st, 2024 (23.59 UTC+3).

Please submit your application through the University of Helsinki´s recruitment portal. Note that applications or any related material sent via email will not be considered.
