The University of Helsinki Trainee Programme for International Master Students is open to all international students enrolled in a University of Helsinki master’s programme.

The discipline of Archaeology at the University of Helsinki is now looking for a TRAINEE.

Your main tasks as a trainee are assisting in e.g.

  • Various work connected with archaeological field work: drawing excavation maps (ArcGIS or QGIS), cataloging archaeological finds, sketching and finalizing images for reports articles (Photoshop and Illustrator), assisting with field exercises (surveyor's level, digital cameras, total station etc.)  

  • Various work connected to publishing, research databases and data storage: Scanning, organizing and storing photographs and slides, drawin illustrations, organizing reference lists, and digitizing photo and text archives. 

  • Event coordination: planning and coordinating events for the students and the staff (for example the Archaeology afternoon in Tiedekulma in December), possibly other seminars and conferences 

  • Other support tasks: such as organising the library and archiving 

  • Assistance with research projects and teaching or curriculum planning are also possible, depending on your qualifications. 

  • Communication: updating instructions and developing the content for websites and social media pages to promote teaching and research conducted at the Department 

 

We expect you to have an interest in the university administration and the development of higher education. You have good networking, communication, and writing skills. You are able to work independently and in an organized manner. We appreciate if you are interested in or maybe even have experience in archive digitizing and using GIS.

Studying in one of the master's programmes of the Department of Cultures is considered a plus when applying.


We offer you an international, multidisciplinary working environment and interesting tasks. With this position, we wish to encourage students with no previous traineeship experience to apply (and who would like to include the traineeship to their degree).

The duration of the traineeship is from 1 September to 31 December 2026 (four months) of part-time (55%) work, leaving time for studies as well. The salary of a trainee is €825 per month for a part-time (55%) trainee.
