Research Coordinator of the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies
The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced studies (HCAS) invites applications for the permanent position of
RESEARCH COORDINATOR
beginning on May 1, 2025.
HCAS is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki. In accordance with the concept of an institute for advanced study, HCAS provides an excellent international research environment for scholars in the social sciences and humanities (SSH). The purpose of HCAS is to facilitate curiosity-driven, original research and interdisciplinary interaction between different fields of research. The working language of HCAS is English. The Research Coordinator serves several key functions in the weekly and annual operations of the HCAS. The main duties of the Research Coordinator are
- the planning and organization of HCAS’s internal and external events, including the weekly fellows’ seminar, academic conferences and workshops, as well as public events,
- communications with HCAS fellows, alumni, and the unit’s international and Finnish networks,
- mentoring of HCAS interns,
- serving as a permanent member of the Internal Committee of Academic Affairs and the Editorial Board of the HCAS publication series.
While having a significant administrative responsibility (70% of their working time), the research coordinator is also provided with time to pursue their own research (30%).
Requirements for the position
- a doctoral degree in any field in the humanities or social sciences,
- excellent command of English and Finnish,
- experience in international conference organization and networking,
- experience in academic publishing and editing,
- ability to effectively organize communications about academic events and the content of research at HCAS,
- evidence of scholarly activity, such as independent research, research collaboration, and involvement in international and Finnish networks,
- strong motivation to foster and develop an internationally competitive research environment in SSH fields.
The following are considered as additional assets
- research profile in an SSH field that complements the expertise of the current leadership of HCAS,
- evidence of international academic mobility,
- familiarity with the faculties of the city center campus of the University of Helsinki,
- success in securing competitive research funding,
- competence in languages other than English and Finnish.

The salary for the position of a research coordinator will be based on level 6 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system for Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross monthly salary is about 4 400 €. There is a six-month trial period for the position.
