Postdoctoral fellowship in Genomic Data Science

Postdoctoral fellowship in Genomic Data Science

We are seeking a qualified and motivated postdoctoral fellow with background in population genetics for national and international research projects of the Human Genomics Unit at FIMM led by Professors Samuli Ripatti and Aarno Palotie.

Role description:
As member of an international, multidisciplinary team of experts in genomics, IT, Clinical Medicine, and Social Sciences within the TeamPerMed consortium, the postdoctoral fellow will develop and apply novel tools for genetic and clinical risk prediction, utilizing the biobank-scale data resources within TeamPerMed. The overarching goal of the project is to empower University of Tartu together with Tartu University Hospital in collaboration with FIMM and Dept of computer science at University of Helsinki, and Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to form the independent Center for Personalized Medicine. As member of the TeamPermed consortium, the candidate is expected to develop her/his own project with new research questions and using tools that will later support the launch of an ambitious independent career.
A certain amount of traveling will be required and there are opportunities for research visits between TeamPerMed partners.

Key requirements:
We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person with strong data science background and interest in working on genetic research questions to benefit population health and personalized medicine. The ideal candidate is capable of working in multidisciplinary international teams of clinical researchers, statistical geneticists, data scientists and molecular biologists. Candidates should have a PhD in data sciences, or in medicine, molecular biology or related field with experience in bioinformatics and genetics.
The candidate should have fluency in written and spoken English (knowledge of Finnish or other European language will be an advantage).

He is chairing the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in Complex Disease Genetics and EU H2020-funded Intervene Consortium. His research group studies genetic variation in the Finnish population and its effects on common complex disease risks and management. He is one of the pioneers in developing and testing the clinical translation of polygenic risk scores in disease prevention and early detection.

Professor Aarno Palotie, M.D., Ph.D. is the Research Director of the Human Genomics program at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), HiLIFE and Scientific Director of FinnGen project. He is also a faculty member at the Center for Human Genome Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard
