Postdoctoral Researcher in Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki invites applications for

 

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN STATISTICS

 

for a fixed term of 3 years, starting on January 1st, 2025, or later as agreed. There will be a trial period of six months in the beginning of the employment.


The postdoctoral researcher will work in the research group of Professor Klaus Nordhausen in the project “Signal recovery in noisy spatial data”. The research group develops modern and efficient multivariate statistical methods tailored for different types of multivariate data, such as time series, spatial data, spatio-temporal data, functional data or tensor-valued observations.


The work of the postdoctoral researcher will focus on developing dimension reduction methods for multivariate spatial data which might be also of functional nature, especially in a blind source separation framework. Five percent of the working time will be allocated to teaching or supervision duties.

 

Requirements


The successful applicant should have a doctoral degree in statistics, mathematics, machine learning, or other relevant field, and experience in developing and applying statistical methods in computationally challenging problems. Prior experience with blind source separation, spatial data or functional data is considered an advantage but not compulsory.

 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Good co-operation and interaction skills are considered an advantage for the applicant.

The salary of the successful candidate will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. For a post-doctoral researcher, the starting salary is typically 3700-3950 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
