The University of Helsinki Trainee Programme for International Master Students is open to all international students enrolled in a University of Helsinki master’s programme.


The X-ray laboratory at the Faculty of Science, Department of Physics is recruiting a
 

TRAINEE

for autumn 2025 within the University of Helsinki trainee programme for international Master students.
 

Topics

The possible topics cover different aspects from experiments to data analysis and modelling as well as instrumental developments. The detailed topic and tasks will be tailored according to the background of the successful candidate and the on-going projects in the X-ray laboratory. Experimental projects may involve using X-rays to study different kind of materials from biological samples to nuclear materials, using the X-ray based techniques available such as XRD, WAXS, XAS, XES, and imaging techniques (µCT). Modelling projects involve application and/or development of atomistic density-functional or Monte Carlo simulation techniques for X-ray interactions in solids and data analysis/experiment simulations.
 

The main tasks are likely to include sample preparation, experiments using X-rays, data analysis and simulations, as well as documentation writing and scientific reporting. We expect you to have a background in Physics or related field. Good communication skills in English, both written and oral is required. Familiarity with X-ray based physics and python (or related) coding language skills are assets.The duration of the traineeship is from 1 September to 31 December 2025 (four months) of part-time (55%) work, leaving time for studies as well. The salary of a trainee is €825 per month for a part-time (55%) trainee.
