The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS), the Neuroscience Center at Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE), and the Department of Computer Science of the University of Helsinki invite applications for
3 Research Fellowship positions.
The fellows will be hired for a fixed term of three years, starting in August 2025.
The fellowships are opened as part of the collaborative framework Interdisciplinary Approaches to Intelligence (INTELLIGENCE3) funded by the University of Helsinki. The aim of the framework is to work on a more comprehensive conception of the nature of intelligence by integrating research results and methods from the humanities and social sciences, neuroscience, and computer science.
We are looking for researchers working on cognition in three different fields 1) the humanities and social sciences, 2) cognitive and systems neuroscience, and 3) computer science.
The researchers will work at the interface between the disciplines, collaborate with each other, and share their research with the recruiting units. As the coordinating unit of INTELLIGENCE3, HCAS will offer the platform for collaboration between the recruited researchers, supported by the multidisciplinary HCAS research community. The researcher in the humanities and social sciences will be affiliated with HCAS. The researchers in neuroscience and computer science will share their time between HCAS and the Neuroscience Center or the Department of Computer Science, respectively.
Who can apply
The candidates are expected to have:
- a PhD degree in one of the relevant fields,
- an ability to conduct independent research,
- at least three years of research experience after PhD degree,
- a track record of internationally recognized high-quality research in their field,
- a research topic with direct relevance for the theme of the project.
Interdisciplinary experience is considered an asset.
The fellows will be selected based on the applicants’ academic merits and the suitability of their research topic for the project.

The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies is an independent institute for advanced study at the University of Helsinki with the purpose to promote high-quality research in the humanities and social sciences, further interaction between different academic fields, and facilitate international and interdisciplinary research collaboration. The Neuroscience Center (NC) is an international research unit within Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki, a leading Nordic university with a strong commitment to life science research. The mission of the NC is to advance fundamental discoveries in neurosciences to understand how the brain gives rise to complex dynamics and behaviours in health and disease. The unit is international and we are committed to inclusive, safe, comfortable culture for promoting diverse talents. The premises of NC are located in Meilahti and Viikki campuses, the working location of the position being in the Meilahti campus.
The Department of Computer Science, which is part of the Faculty of Science, is a leading Computer Science research and teaching unit in Finland. The research themes of the Department cover artificial intelligence, algorithms, computer networks and distributed systems, and software systems. Since the beginning of 2025, it is participating in the new ELLIS Institute Finland, which is part of the network European Laboratory of Learning and Intelligent Systems.
The INTELLIGENCE3 Fellowships are salaried positions. The salary will be based on levels 6–7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointees will receive a salary component based on personal work performance. The annual gross salary is 58 000 – 71 000 €. The fellows are entitled to a personal allowance up to 4 000 € for research and travel costs. In addition, in support of their empirical work, the fellows in neuro- and computer science will be provided with a research budget covering materials, equipment, access to infrastructure, and a research assistant.
There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
