Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a fixed-term position of

Doctoral Researcher in the field of Neurovascular Biology

from 01.02.2026 until 30.08.2029, or according to agreement.

The Korhonen research group at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, and the Wihuri Research Institute is recruiting a doctoral researcher for a PhD project in neurovascular biology.
Our group studies neurovascular communication and its impact on central nervous system (CNS) function. The PhD project will examine how the vasculature regulates the function of oligodendrocyte lineage cells and CNS health in aging and repair, using advanced in vivo and in vitro models combined with cutting-edge molecular, imaging, and transcriptomic approaches.

About the Role

The doctoral researcher will work within a multidisciplinary environment integrating vascular biology, neuroscience, and glial cell biology. The work will be conducted at Biomedicum Helsinki on the Meilahti campus. The successful candidate will:

•    Plan and carry out independent and collaborative experiments using in vivo mouse models and complementary in vitro/ex vivo approaches
•    Employ molecular, histological, imaging, transcriptomic, and proteomic techniques
•    Collaborate closely with internal and international partners
•    Present research findings at seminars and conferences, and prepare scientific manuscripts

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with:

•    A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field
•    Strong interest in vascular or neurovascular biology, glial cell biology, or CNS repair mechanisms
•    Prior experience in one or more of the following: in vivo mouse work, cell culture, molecular biology, microscopy, transcriptomics, proteomics, or related methods
•    Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international team

The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment. If the candidate does not already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, it must be applied for separately: www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/the-application-process-in-a-nutshell.
