Doctoral Researcher in Molecular Biosciences

The Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the laboratory of Dr. Uwe Richter invite applications for

DOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION in Molecular Biosciences

for a fixed-term of (3) years, starting 1st April 2025 or by mutual agreement.

Our lab's research experimentally addresses fundamental questions in molecular and cell biology of mitochondria and their integration in the cell. We apply state-of-the-art technologies and develop novel methodologies to study mitochondrial dysfunction with the ultimate aim of improving the lives of patients with mitochondrial disease. Our lab is part of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme (MIBS) on the Viikki Campus and has a diverse and rich research environment with a world-class international reputation.

Project description

This PhD student position is available in the laboratory headed by Dr. Uwe Richter, Mitochondrial Signalling and Translation Stress Responses | University of Helsinki

Mitochondria, organelles in our cells, are so much more than powerhouses; they contain their own genome, are enclosed by two lipid bilayers, and are essential for a myriad of cellular functions. The mitochondrial inner membrane is invaginated, and these structures are called cristae. Cristae number depends on the metabolic and developmental state of the cell. How cristae invaginations are created de novo is not understood well. In this project, together we will identify the molecular players, their interactions, and hierarchy in the process of cristea neogenesis. A deeper understanding of this molecular process will be invaluable for elucidating mitochondrial function in blastocyst biology, which is crucial for embryonic and foetal development. In your PhD, you will utilise advanced microscopy techniques, including single-molecule tracking and confocal microscopy. In addition to standard biochemical and genetic wet-lab methods, you will conduct a genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 activation screen to address your research question.

Qualification requirements

Requirements for the doctoral researcher are:

  • M.Sc. degree in biochemistry or molecular biology
  • Knowledge of laboratory practices in biochemistry and molecular methods.
  • Experience on the microscope is advantageous
  • Strong motivation to complete a Ph.D. degree.

The salary is based on levels 2-4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. The appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance with the overall salary amounting to approximately 2400−3000 €/month (gross) depending on the stage of the doctoral studies and work performance. A trial period of 6 months is applied.

How to apply

In your application (preferable in a single pdf-file), please, include:

1) A CV (with possible publications included),

2) A copy of your completed courses during the M.Sc,

3) Contact details of two references (e.g. M.Sc. thesis supervisors),

4) A letter (max 1 page) with a description of your research interests, motivation, and why you would be a suitable candidate for the project.

To apply, please submit your application by March 6, 2025, using the University of Helsinki electronic recruitment system. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via the SAP Fiori portal.
