The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR
as of 1.1.2027. The field of the position is pathology with Swedish as the language of instruction.
The positions may be filled as associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.
Associate professor
An appointee to the position of associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for associate professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.
Professor
An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that this person represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits , if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application deadline.
Duties
The University of Helsinki has national responsibility for Swedish-language education in medicine. The associate/ professor is responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in pathology as well as participating in other basic education and specialist training in the field. The associate/ professor will provide teaching in the Degree Programme in Medicine, including practical small group and lecture-based teaching. The duties of the position include carrying out and supervising scientific research and, consequently, following scientific developments as well as participating in public engagement and Finnish and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the appointee has other duties related to the responsibilities of the Faculty.
The practical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with an applicable specialist’s degree or license in the field (pathology).
The appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate a suitable secondary position.
Trial period of six months will be applied.
Requirements for language skills
According to the Government Decree on Universities, holders of teaching and research positions must be proficient in the language of instruction. The language of instruction is Swedish. In addition, the appointee must have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Finnish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.
When the language of instruction is Swedish the language proficiency recommended for successfully attending to the duties of the position corresponds with level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. During the recruitment process, language proficiency is demonstrated with documents, an interview and a teaching demonstration. Salary
The salary will be based on level 7 (associate professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
