The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of
Assistant Professor / Associate Professor/ Professor
as of 1 May 2025, or by agreement. The field of the position is Public Health with Finnish and English as the language of instruction.
The position may be filled as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.
Duties
The Assistant/Associate/Professor is responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education in public health, including epidemiology, across all the faculty's educational programs and participates in practical small group and lecture-based teaching.
Responsibilities include contributing to the teaching and development of the new Master's program in healthcare development and supporting synergy between educational programs.
The position includes carrying out and supervising scientific research and, consequently, following scientific developments as well as participating in public engagement and Finnish and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned by the Faculty.
The appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position.
Specific selection criteria for the Professorship in Public Health
The selected assistant / associate /professor is expected to have extensive knowledge of public health science and health promotion, as well as a deep understanding of several areas of public health. The selected candidate should also have the ability and willingness to implement and develop high-quality teaching in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies across all the faculty's degree programs. One of the key selection criteria is also the ability and willingness to supervise a wide range of theses at different levels in multidisciplinary collaboration within the faculty's degree programs. Familiarity with one area of clinical medicine is considered an advantage.
Teaching and supervision experience, as well as previous experience in educational development and the interdisciplinary production of teaching materials, and experience with online teaching, will be considered an advantage. Additionally, proficiency in epidemiological methods, expertise in multi-method research methodologies, knowledge of the health system, and experience in applying digital methods and artificial intelligence in health promotion will be considered beneficial.

Assistant / Associate Professor
An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.
Professor
An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application period.
Trial period of six months will be applied.
Requirements for language skills

Salary
The salary will be based on levels 8-10 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
