Assistant professor / Associate professor/ Professor

 

The field of the position is Emergency Medicine and the language of instruction is Finnish.
The position may be filled as Assistant professor, Associate professor or Professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

 

As the position is part time, the appointee must be employed (as deputy chief, head of department or chief physician) at HUS Helsinki University Hospital.

 

Duties
The Assistant / Associate  / Professor is responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in the field. The Assistant / Associate  / Professor also participates in teaching in his or her specialty in practical small group and in lecture-based teaching. The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research in Emergency Medicine, following developments in research in the relevant field and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned by the Faculty. 

 

Common selection criteria of the Faculty of Medicine

Assistant / associate professor  
An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant / associate professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. 
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience. 
Professor 
An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. 
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application period.

 

The practical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with a specialist’s degree or license in Emergency Medicine.
Trial period of six months will be applied.

 

Requirements for language skills

Salary
The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

A separate application must be submitted for the position of head of department at HUS Helsinki University Hospital in accordance with the HUS instructions. 

 

Should HUS terminate the appointment process, or the proposals of the appointment committees of the Faculty of Medicine and HUS differ from each other, the appointment process for the professorship at the University of Helsinki will be terminated. If the appointee to the professorship resigns from the position of head of department at HUS, his or her employment contract with the University of Helsinki will also be terminated.
