Assistant Professor / Associate Professor in Clinical Genetics and Gene Therapy
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of
ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
as of 1 April 2026, or by agreement.
The field of the position is Clinical Genetics and Gene Therapy with Finnish as the language of instruction.

We are looking for candidates who will strengthen and complement the scientific profile of the Faculty of Medicine. The selected applicant must have strong qualifications in the field of Clinical Genetics and Gene Therapy relative to their career stage and must be committed to high-quality research and teaching. The selected candidate is expected to establish and lead an independent research group that conducts innovative research in the field of Clinical Genetics and to obtain external research funding.
Assistant / Associate Professor
An appointee to the position of assistant/ associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.
The appointee is required to participate in clinical teaching, therefore the person selected for the position is required to have a specialist qualification in a relevant clinical field (such as medical genetics) and must be a licensed physician or have a license to work as a doctor.
The appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position.
Duties
The Assistant / Associate professor shall promote the development of Gene Therapies for clinical treatment of patients. The Assistant / Associate Professor is responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education in Clinical Genetics and Gene Therapy. In addition, the Assistant / Associate Professor participates in practical small group teaching and and in lecture-based teaching in their area of expertise, as applicable, across all educational programs of the faculty. The position includes carrying out and supervising scientific research in Clinical Genetics and Gene Therapy, following developments in research in the relevant field and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field.
This task also involves the development of innovation activities in the research field within the faculty. In addition, the duties include other tasks assigned by the Faculty.
Trial period of six months will be applied.
Requirements for language skills
Holders of teaching and research positions at Finnish universities must be proficient in the language of teaching, either Finnish or Swedish.
Salary
The salary will be based on level 7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
