The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a part-time (35%) 

 

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR 

 

The field of the position is medical genetics and the language of instruction is Swedish. 

 

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage. 

 

The professorship in medical genetics is associated with a research director’s position at Folkhälsan Research Centre. Applicants must submit separate applications for the professorship and the research director’s position. 

 

An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience. 

 

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide toplevel research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. 

 

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. 

 

The person performing the university's teaching and research position is required to master the language in which he or she must provide teaching. Successful completion of the task also requires good English language skills.

 

When the language of instruction is Swedish, the language proficiency recommended for successfully attending to the duties of the position corresponds with level C2of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At the faculty’s discretion, level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages may be accepted as a minimum Swedish language proficiency requirement. The assistant professor /associate professor /professor participates in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in the field, including small-group and lecture-based teaching. 

 

The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following related developments in research, and participating in community relations and Finnish and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the department. 

 

The appointee is required to participate in clinical teaching, therefore the person selected for the position must be a licensed physician or have a license to work as a doctor.

 

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

If the process for appointing the research director is cancelled or if Folkhälsan and the Faculty of Medicine appointment committees put forward differing proposals, the process for appointing the Faculty of Medicine professor/assistant professor will be cancelled. 

 

If the appointee to the professorship/assistant professorship resigns from the position of research director at Folkhälsan, his or her employment contract with the University of Helsinki will also be terminated.
